Join us for a ten day journey through one of the most beautiful places on the planet, New Zealand’s South Island. There will be warm autumn colors against stunning glaciated mountains, seacoasts, lakes, alpine meadows, towering peaks, waterfalls, and more. The workshop will start in Queenstown, in the southwest corner of the South Island. This area is famous for its glorious display of fall colors, and is bordered by Fiordland National Park, a UN World Heritage area and home to the extraordinary natural wonder that is Milford Sound. The photographic journey will then move north to the rugged coastal region where dramatic coastline meets Mt Cook. Following several days in the Fox Glacier area, we’ll venture back South where we’ll spend a night in Wanaka and the Mackenzie Basin, a high-country landscape featuring glacial lakes, rivers, and the snow-capped peaks. We’ll then continue North East to the other side of Mount Cook National Park. Marc and Randy will be joined and assisted by NZ local pro photographer and guide, Neil Protheroe. You’ll enjoy the view from any seat in one of our three private Toyota Highlanders. Strictly limited to 10 guests. IF YOU MISSED THIS ONE, JOIN ME IN 2018.
Join us for six days in the Palouse, an incredible region in eastern Washington State, with rolling hills filled with patterns of growing crops interspersed with rural barns and buildings and ever-changing skies. There really is no place like it in the world, a unique landscape formed by winds depositing silt from post-ice age floods, creating a beautiful rolling rhythm to the landscape that is particularly friendly to the landscape photographer’s lens. The light and shadows play across the fields and hills, providing infinite combinations of compositions to pursue. It is no wonder that the Palouse is now considered one of the top landscape photography destinations. We will also be visiting The Palouse Falls, another unique and beautiful post-ice age formation which offers amazing landscape photography opportunities.
A typical day in the field includes morning and afternoon/evening shooting in a variety of the best locations the Palouse has to offer, with a mid day break to recharge. While on site we will evaluate the day’s light and weather and discuss potential compositions and in-camera techniques to produce great imagery. During the midday hours, we will also incorporate classroom sessions of post-processing workflow, digital file management, and working through selected RAW files using Lightroom, Photoshop, and various plugins.
THIS TIPS IS FULLY BOOKED. WE ARE NOW TAKING RESERVATIONS FOR2018.
Join Marc Muench and Randy Hanna on an exciting photo expedition to Svalbard in June 2017, specially arranged for nature photography enthusiasts. We have chartered our own private ship, the M/S Malmø, for this expedition Strictly limited to 11 guests, we will have three pros on board for a very high instructor to guest ratio.
We will focus on wildlife, including the polar bears on ice, birds and seals. This is a great opportunity to experience the arctic ice in the polar landscape. Our schedule is arranged around utilizing the time most beneficial to observing and photographing the wildlife on our excursions from the boat. Two Zodiac boats will get everyone closer to the wildlife on the ice or to explore the amazing frozen landscape of the glaciers. With 24 hours of sun, magic hour will last hours making for many more opportunities to witness the unique and wild qualities of this amazing land. We are omitting the traditional “cruise-ship” stops as these would take too much time from our photographic opportunities.
SOLD OUT Greenland is about 836,000 square miles, and mostly covered in ice. We’ll spend 8 days sailing in a tiny portion of this enormous country, but will be completely immersed in one of the largest landscapes you’ll ever see. Our twin-masted schooner, Donna Wood will take us through Scoresby Sund, visiting many amazing glaciers, mountains and icebergs. Scoresby Sund is located on the Eastern shore of the country, just north of Iceland. We‘ll fly over from Reykjavik, thus maximizing our time in the Fjords.
There’s a chance we’ll see Arctic Hare and Musk Ox while taking one of our many walks on shore. We’ll anchor in just the right spots so that we can photograph sunrise and sunset from the shore. This will be a great opportunity to create landscapes with your tripods and filters, as opposed to all the hand held work done from the deck of the boat. This time of year the night will stay quite bright allowing for a sleep or more photography.
When we’re not photographing or eating a fresh hot meal in our dining room, we’ll be reviewing images and learning post processing techniques. Bring your laptop and enjoy editing in the main cabin, or simply read your favorite book and sip on some hot tea while we’re sailing to the next location. Cold weather suits are provided, but often when the sun is out a T-shirt will be all you need to enjoy the views. Expect to be amongst a group of like-minded photographers who will want to work hard to “get the shot”. We’ll be up early and up late, because there are more than 17 hours of daylight in Greenland at this time of year!
This workshop pairs up perfectly with the Iceland West Fjords workshop, which follows right after Greenland.
ONLY ONE SPOT AVAILABLE
Join me for our Iceland Highlands Adventure in August 2018. Led by Andy Williams, Randy Hanna and our Icelandic Viking Pro and Guide Skarpi Thrainsson. For centuries, the interior of Iceland was virtually inaccessible, for years at a time playing host only to outlaws in hiding. Via the mountain roads Kjölur and Sprengisandur, the untouched wilderness of Iceland’s mountainous centre is now open—for cautious exploration by foot or 4×4 vehicles—in the summer months. This workshop is limited to 8 guests so there will be plenty of one on one quality instruction. On this workshop everything is included, all meals, double occupancy lodging (singles available, just ask), transportation by 4x4 Super Jeeps, and photographic guiding and instruction from two professional photographers.
On the highlands workshop we cover most of the interior of Iceland. Some of the most interesting parts of Iceland with volcanic activity are to be found in the highlands, such as Landmannalaugar and the region around Askja and Herðubreið, the national mountain of Iceland. The highlands are mostly an uninhabitable volcanic desert with phenomenal photography locations in the few oasis of the dessert, which can be crossed only during the Icelandic summer (typically from June through September). For the rest of the year, the highland roads are closed. Most highland roads require four wheel drive vehicles, because it is necessary to ford rivers and rough terrain. On our workshop we use specially modified 4×4 Super Jeeps and our Icelandic Viking Guide, Skarpi, who has years of experience camping, hiking, and exploring the highlands. We will be doing some moderate hiking to the best shooting locations in the highlands, so please bring your hiking boots. Major waterfalls such as Aldeyjarfoss and Godafoss are featured as well. We’ll chase the light, out for sunrise, then day-shooting where it’s good, and sunset.
Join me on this very small group (only 8 guests) workshop and photograph the beauty of autumn in Italy’s Venice and The Dolomites! You’ll be expertly guided me and Paolo DeFaveri to both iconic and off-the-beaten track locations. Expect to shoot from sunrise to sunset, and even in the night! Everything’s included, so just pack up your gear and get ready for an amazing photography adventure.
Join me and be part of a very small group in Slovenia! Experience a range of incredible photographic locations and experiment with a variety of photography techniques on this nine day workshop led by Randy Hanna. With amazing photo-ops all day and night, we’ll travel by comfortable minivan, stay in well-chosen high quality accommodations and eat wonderful food. Co-guiding this workshop will be amazing Slovenian photographer Ana Pogačar.
Discover Slovenia and the Julian Alps with your camera in hand and capture stunning images of mountain landscapes, glacial lakes and rivers, as well as scenes of every day life in traditional villages and the historic city of Ljubljana.
SOLD OUT The Okavango Delta is regarded as one of the four “must-see” areas in Africa.
In November 2017 Randy Hanna will lead a private group of photographers into Botswana's Okavango Delta, one of Africa's best wildlife areas. This safari and workshop combines some of the finest wildlife photography anywhere in the Delta, with top notch hands-on photographic and digital workflow instruction. Our two camps for this adventure have been handpicked in Botswana's Okavango Delta to create a unique safari experience geared to incredible close-up game viewing for the serious photographer. At both locations we will have the entire camp to ourselves, so we can come and go as we please and set our schedule to achieve the very best in photography. THIS TRIP IS FULLY BOOKED.
SOLD OUT If grand iceberg laden landscapes and walking with penguins has been something that has been on your bucket list, now is the time to make it happen. I will be co-leading this trip with a number of Muench Pro Photographers aboard. Basing our adventure aboard the vessel Ushuaia, we can go places larger vessels can't go. Our smaller group size will afford us better access to the landings. Iceberg cruising, you can count on as much as the weather and navigation will allow.
Join me along with the Muench Workshop Team, as I return to Antarctica.

Join me as we explore two wonderful regions of Italy for lots of fine photography, fine wine and find food. Although we will be chasing light much of the time, there will plenty of time to discover the back roads of Italy. We will also have a wonderful cooking class and several wine tastings along the way. This workshop is followed by an optional extension into Slovenia. This adventure is fully booked.

Roughly 500,000 of these wildebeest are pregnant females which will drop their calves over 10 days between late January and early March. With the lions, cheetahs, and leopards keeping a sharp eye out for their next meal, it is not-stop action and one of the most dramatic times to be on safari in Tanzania. We will stay in two private camps located right in the heart of the southern plains. THIS TRIP IS FULLY BOOKED.
I will be leading a fun filled private photography tour to the wonderful Island of Aruba. Arriving on the afternoon of the 7th, we will undertake a series of landscape, city scape, and street photography around this beautiful island for the next 5 days. PRIVATE EXCURSION
Join us in October 2015 in Botswana, where we will be uniquely positioned to shoot in three of Northern Botswana's most famous wildlife areas: The Okavango Delta, Linyanti Reserve, and Chobe Riverfront. We are combining three camps this safari workshop, each located in its own distinctly different habitat. This lets us maximize our exposure to the widest variety of wildlife. For a detailed itinerary and to register, just follow this link.
This peak, dry season safari focuses on the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater and both the central and northern Serengeti. While the Crater and Central Serengeti hold immense numbers of resident wildlife, the northern Serengeti’s Kogakuria/Lamai Wedge will be brimming with migratory activity as nearly 2 million grazers arrive in search of green pasture. Thomson Safaris is one of only a few tour companies sending travelers to this scenic and remote location which lies just a short drive from the famed Mara River. Just with anything in nature, there are no guarantees. Should a grand river crossing occur, we will do our best to be in position to capture this impressive show of nature. To sign up for this safari or to obtain additional information, please contact Andrew@thomsonsafaris.com or call him at 1-800-235-0289 and ask about the Randy Hanna photo safari for September 2015. A detailed itinerary can be downloaded here. THIS SAFARI IS SOLD OUT.
I'm co-leading another trip with Grant Atkinson into the heart of Botswana. We will kick off our adventure with a bush plane flight from Maun to Khawi Tented Camp. Highlights will include aerial photography over the Okavango Delta, photography from a specially designed boat by Pangolin Safaris. The Chobe River during the dry season is one of the most incredible places in Africa to get up close to wildlife. During the months of August-October the Chobe River becomes a vital water source for large numbers of elephant, buffalo, waterbuck, kudu, impala and warthog. The Chobe River is also one of the best places to photograph hippos and crocodiles. Waterbirds abound, and add an entirely new chapter to our photographic opportunities, as do some of the raptors that occur in the area. Most bird species are more approachable on the Chobe than anywhere, making for high-quality photographic opportunities. By basing ourselves right on the river, we are just a few minutes boat ride away from the park entrance. Lodges used during this safari include Khawai Tented Camp, Linyanti Bush Camp, and Waterlily Lodge. THIS SAFARI IS SOLD OUT.
Join me for an Adventure style photo safari with Unlimited Safaris. We will be operating deep inside the Suvuti area of Botswana for the best in big cat photography that Botswana has to offer. We will spend 4 and 1/2 days in this wonderful area, right at the height of the best game viewing. THIS SAFARI IS SOLD OUT.

This itinerary offers amazing wildlife opportunities and stunning scenery during one of the most underrated months of the year! We will photograph grand vista, deep fords, and sweeping glaciers including the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers as we work our way from Christchurch to Milford Sound and back.
Carved by glaciers over 100,000 years the Fiordland landscape is one where waterfalls cascade hundreds of metres into deep black fiords; where ancient rainforest untouched by man clings to mountains and where shimmering lakes and granite peaks look as they did a thousand years ago. Truly, a photographers paradise and we are going to be there. THIS TIP IS SOLD OUT.
