Croatia

SOLD OUT

Join me and Ana Pogacar in Croatia, with a wealth of photographic possibilities and the chance to stretch yourself creatively in some of Europe’s most stunning locations. You’ll return with an impressive portfolio of travel shots as well as some incredible memories of the Adriatic coast and the historical region of Dalmatia.

We start in the charming old town of Rovinj on the Istrian Peninsula including a visit to the Roman amphitheatre at Pula. Get close ups of stunning architectural details and capture the colour and bustle of life in the enchanting cobbled streets.  Try creative long exposures to capture waterfalls and stunning reflections at Plitvice National Park, the ‘lake district’ of Croatia—don’t forget your polarizer for this part of the workshop! Capture the contrast of seascapes against the old city of Dubrovnik. Walk the city, camera in hand, and capture medieval to Austro-Hungarian architecture, café culture, trams, markets, and rooftop views over lively squares. There’s something in this city for everyone.

This workshop is very diverse and involves a lot of outdoor photography; we will shoot from scenic vantage points, which we can  either drive to, or some require a short walk. Dubrovnik is notorious for its steps and the city walls require about two hours walk. Plitvice Lakes National Park is all outdoors and there are some moderate elevation changes. You should therefore have a moderate level of fitness and come with suitable clothes and footwear. All levels of photographer, from beginner to pro, are welcome. This is a workshop that won’t disappoint!

Lofoten and Senja - Winter Landscapes of Norway

Come with us to the Norwegian Arctic Circle, and photograph the dramatic Lofoten Islands. We’ll spend 5 days seeking jagged mountain peaks in and around Lofoten, then sail aboard the MS Richard With up to the region known as Senja. for more amazing steep mountain landscapes and hopefully, northern lights . You’ll photograph icy fjords and frozen lakes, rocky seacoasts, turquoise water, white sand beaches, rustic fishing villages, and more. If we’re lucky and the weather is clear, we will be treated to some of the best northern lights on the planet. This workshop will be expertly led and guided by Randy Hanna and MW local pro and guide Cody Duncan, who has logged more days in along the northern coast of Norway than most anyone! Most shooting locations are very near to where we’ll park our vehicles. You’ll need to be able to walk on uneven and at times, slippery ground. There will be some opportunities for the more adventurous types to hike or climb a little bit.

We will teach techniques in: high dynamic range shooting, panoramas, long exposures during the day (and night!), star and aurora imagery. New Zealand - Landscape Paradise in Autumn

Join us for a ten day journey through one of the most beautiful places on the planet, New Zealand’s South Island. There will be warm autumn colors against stunning glaciated mountains, seacoasts, lakes, alpine meadows, towering peaks, waterfalls, and more. The workshop will start in Queenstown, in the southwest corner of the South Island. This area is famous for its glorious display of fall colors, and is bordered by Fiordland National Park, a UN World Heritage area and home to the extraordinary natural wonder that is Milford Sound. The photographic journey will then move north to the rugged coastal region where dramatic coastline meets Mt Cook. Following several days in the Fox Glacier area, we’ll venture back South where we’ll spend a night in Wanaka and the Mackenzie Basin, a high-country landscape featuring glacial lakes, rivers, and the snow-capped peaks. We’ll then continue North East to the other side of Mount Cook National Park. You’ll enjoy the view from any seat in one of our three private Toyota Highlanders. Your leaders and guides are veteran Muench Workshops pros Randy Hanna and Neil Protheroe.

This is a photographic workshop, and you can expect to learn or reinforce techniques and skills in composition, the art of seeing, proper exposure in the landscape, shooting for natural HDR, panoramas, night photography, and more. We will be providing daily instruction both in the field and in the classroom. Expect to be up each morning before sunrise and out each evening after sunset. With a new moon during our workshop, you can expect to be out late at night, too! We’ll feature our extremely popular image reviews and Lightroom processing tips as much as possible during the workshop. This workshop is for any level of photographer, and non-photographing significant others are welcome! There are no strenuous hikes or climbs on this workshop, but you should be able to walk a mile comfortably, and carry your photography gear.

The Palouse Region of Washington State

Join us for six days in the Palouse, an incredible region in eastern Washington State, with rolling hills filled with patterns of growing crops interspersed with rural barns and buildings and ever-changing skies. There really is no place like it in the world, a unique landscape formed by winds depositing silt from post-ice age floods, creating a beautiful rolling rhythm to the landscape that is particularly friendly to the landscape photographer’s lens. The light and shadows play across the fields and hills, providing infinite combinations of compositions to pursue. It is no wonder that the Palouse is now considered one of the top landscape photography destinations. We will also be visiting The Palouse Falls, another unique and beautiful post-ice age formation which offers amazing landscape photography opportunities.

A typical day in the field includes morning and afternoon/evening shooting in a variety of the best locations the Palouse has to offer, with a mid day break to recharge. While on site we will evaluate the day’s light and weather and discuss potential compositions and in-camera techniques to produce great imagery. During the midday hours, we will also incorporate classroom sessions of post-processing workflow, digital file management, and working through selected RAW files using Lightroom, Photoshop, and various plugins.

Tanzania Photo Safari

ONLY THREE OPENINGS

Join me in Tanzania to explore the river crossings of the great migration, find the cats of the central Serengeti region, and photograph amazing vistas of the vast grassy plains. I havebeen leading safaris into the Serengeti of Tanzania since 2007 and know the country like the back of my hand. We’ll fly everyone straight out to the heart of the safari country where we have amazing camps set up that put us right in the thick of the action!

This safari is all about photography and you can expect lots of it.

Our first camp will be located in the northernmost region of the Serengeti National Park, a prime location to photograph the classic river crossings in which millions of wildeebest and zebras cross the Mara River as they return to Tanzania from Kenya. In hopes of capturing the great migration we will use our time in the north to strategically position ourselves to record these iconic images, should mother nature cooperate for us. This location will also allow us to explore the northern plains and rocky areas that is seldom visited. These areas often produce striking images of lions and leopards as well as vistas that are unique to this area.

Our second location will be a private, tented camp in the central Serengeti, an area that I often refer to as “Cat Alley”. Here our emphasis will be on lion, leopard, and cheetah. Exploring the numerous rocky outcroppings called kopjes, you will get to capture the true endless plains of the Serengeti and the unlimited photography that is all around you. We will be able to follow the game, where ever they take us.

Iceland - The Highlands Adventure

SOLD OUT

Join me for our Iceland Highlands Adventure in August 2018. Led by Andy Williams, Randy Hanna and our Icelandic Viking Pro and Guide Skarpi Thrainsson. For centuries, the interior of Iceland was virtually inaccessible, for years at a time playing host only to outlaws in hiding. Via the mountain roads Kjölur and Sprengisandur, the untouched wilderness of Iceland’s mountainous centre is now open—for cautious exploration by foot or 4×4 vehicles—in the summer months.  This workshop is limited to 8 guests so there will be plenty of one on one quality instruction. On this workshop everything is included, all meals, double occupancy lodging (singles available, just ask), transportation by 4x4 Super Jeeps, and photographic guiding and instruction from two professional photographers.

On the highlands workshop we cover most of the interior of Iceland. Some of the most interesting parts of Iceland with volcanic activity are to be found in the highlands, such as Landmannalaugar and the region around Askja and Herðubreið, the national mountain of Iceland. The highlands are mostly an uninhabitable volcanic desert with phenomenal photography locations in the few oasis of the dessert, which can be crossed only during the Icelandic summer (typically from June through September). For the rest of the year, the highland roads are closed. Most highland roads require four wheel drive vehicles, because it is necessary to ford rivers and rough terrain. On our workshop we use specially modified 4×4 Super Jeeps and our Icelandic Viking Guide, Skarpi, who has years of experience camping, hiking, and exploring the highlands. We will be doing some moderate hiking to the best shooting locations in the highlands, so please bring your hiking boots. Major waterfalls such as Aldeyjarfoss and Godafoss are featured as well. We’ll chase the light, out for sunrise, then day-shooting where it’s good, and sunset.

Greenland

SOLD OUT  Greenland is about 836,000 square miles, and mostly covered in ice. We’ll spend 8 days sailing in a tiny portion of this enormous country, but will be completely immersed in one of the largest landscapes you’ll ever see. Our twin-masted schooner, Donna Wood will take us through Scoresby Sund, visiting many amazing glaciers, mountains and icebergs. Scoresby Sund is located on the Eastern shore of the country, just north of Iceland. We‘ll fly over from Reykjavik, thus maximizing our time in the Fjords.

There’s a chance we’ll see Arctic Hare and Musk Ox while taking one of our many walks on shore. We’ll anchor in just the right spots so that we can photograph sunrise and sunset from the shore. This will be a great opportunity to create landscapes with your tripods and filters, as opposed to all the hand held work done from the deck of the boat. This time of year the night will stay quite bright allowing for a sleep or more photography.

When we’re not photographing or eating a fresh hot meal in our dining room, we’ll be reviewing images and learning post processing techniques. Bring your laptop and enjoy editing in the main cabin, or simply read your favorite book and sip on some hot tea while we’re sailing to the next location. Cold weather suits are provided, but often when the sun is out a T-shirt will be all you need to enjoy the views. Expect to be amongst a group of like-minded photographers who will want to work hard to “get the shot”. We’ll be up early and up late, because there are more than 17 hours of daylight in Greenland at this time of year!

This workshop pairs up perfectly with the Iceland West Fjords workshop, which follows right after Greenland.

Polar Bears and Artic Landscapes - Svalbard

Join Marc Muench and Randy Hanna on an exciting photo expedition to Svalbard in June 2017, specially arranged for nature photography enthusiasts. We will focus on wildlife, including the polar bears on ice, birds and seals. This is a great opportunity to experience the arctic ice in the polar landscape. Our schedule is arranged around utilizing the time most beneficial to observing and photographing the wildlife on our excursions from the boat. Two Zodiac boats will get everyone closer to the wildlife on the ice or to explore the amazing frozen landscape of the glaciers. With 24 hours of sun, magic hour will last hours making for many more opportunities to witness the unique and wild qualities of this amazing land. We are omitting the traditional “cruise-ship” stops as these would take too much time from our photographic opportunities.

I'm co-leading another trip with Grant Atkinson into the heart of Botswana.  We will kick off our adventure with a bush plane flight from Maun to Khawi Tented Camp.  Highlights will include aerial photography over the Okavango Delta, photography from a specially designed boat by Pangolin Safaris.  The Chobe River during the dry season is one of the most incredible places in Africa to get up close to wildlife. During the months of August-October the Chobe River becomes a vital water source for large numbers of elephant, buffalo, waterbuck, kudu, impala and warthog. The Chobe River is also one of the best places to photograph hippos and crocodiles. Waterbirds abound, and add an entirely new chapter to our photographic opportunities, as do some of the raptors that occur in the area. Most bird species are more approachable on the Chobe than anywhere, making for high-quality photographic opportunities. By basing ourselves right on the river, we are just a few minutes boat ride away from the park entrance.   Lodges used during this safari include Khawai Tented Camp, Linyanti Bush Camp, and Waterlily Lodge. You will witness and photograph the beginning of the wildebeest rut and the migration as the herds move through the central Serengeti. This itinerary offers amazing wildlife opportunities and stunning scenery during one of the most underrated months of the year!  To sign up for this safari or to obtain additional information, please contact Andrew@thomsonsafaris.com or call him at 1-800-235-0289 and ask about the Randy Hanna photo safari for May 2015.  Our typical itinerary for this adventure is located here.

New Zealand - The Southern Island

A palette of dramatic scenes, New Zealand’s South Island hosts the purest natural landscapes you’ll ever experience.  Showcasing the best of nature’s assets where towering alps meet peaceful sounds and rugged coastlines merge with sweeping plains, this excursion is all about capturing the best of the Southern Island in all of her glory.    We will photograph grand vista, deep fords, and sweeping glaciers including the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers as we work our way from Christchurch to Milford Sound and back.

Carved by glaciers over 100,000 years the Fiordland landscape is one where waterfalls cascade hundreds of metres into deep black fiords; where ancient rainforest untouched by man clings to mountains and where shimmering lakes and granite peaks look as they did a thousand years ago.  Truly, a photographers paradise and we are going to be there.  THIS TIP IS SOLD OUT.

Tasmania - The North West

Full of color and flavor, Tasmania's North West is the gateway to some of Tasmania's most beautiful natural places.

NW.JPG

Tasmania's North West is a great place for photography and offers spectacular views at every turn, from Mt Roland near Devonport, Table Cape near Wynyard and the famous 'Nut' at Stanley. Some of Tasmania's prettiest cities and towns sit right on the water's edge on the scenic North West coast, each with their own unique attractions and relaxed seaside atmosphere.  This excursion focuses on the North West region of Tasmania and is a blend of  LPN workshop shooting and exploration.  This excursion is fully booked.  If you missed this one, we will be back in 2017.
